Friday follow up 11/18/11
For almost a year I have been writing the “Roxy the traveling dog” blog. One of the weekly features that has been fun to write, and has gotten good response, is the “Shop dog report”. Every Friday I will post pictures and updates on what is currently being worked on. This has been a great way for clients, and the readers of the blog, to watch the progress on a piece. I have featured the functional art pieces, and the sculptures. And sometimes, it’s just an update on us at an art show.
I’m going to start doing the same thing on this website. So every Friday will be “Friday follow up”.
This week is the start of a new sculpture. Al has a few sculptures started, but this one is going to be something new for him.
This is a piece of alabaster we picked up at rock shop in southern Utah in the spring. Al has been looking at it for a while, trying to see what is in the rock. He decided there was a fox in there waiting to come out. So he brought the rock home, and started a clay mock up. Whenever he has carved art pieces out of wood, he has created it first in the clay. This gives him a good reference, because once you remove the wood, or in this case the stone, it’s gone and can’t be replaced.
Al has played around with different pieces of alabaster to test how it will carve. This will help once he gets started on this. This is going to be an exciting project to see the fox emerging from this beautiful piece of stone.
